Golf is a sport that gets both a good and bad reputation among the general public. Some see it as a way of life while others mock it lack of ability to make you sweat, deeming it not a sport. But there are many lessons to be learned about the sport, and those who mock it are often very uneducated about it. This is why there are very good and helpful golf instruction books available to read.

It is definitely one of the most difficult and intimidating sports to start. The skills it takes to play an average game of golf take years and years of practice. Luckily, with the use if instructional books beginning is a lot easier to do. It can teach you the techniques and etiquette necessary to play.Instructional books are a great way to get a start. It will teach you all the basics needed to start a path to a successful golf game. Since there are so many technical things to learn such as clubs, terms and etiquette, a book can teach just as much about golf as a day at the course can.

Instruction books allow you to learn at your own pace in a less threatening or stressful environment. Practicing For Great Wedge Shots

Wedge shots are a powerful short game weapon, maybe the most powerful . High handicap golfers hit wedge shots from the rough, a trap, or just behind the cart path. While low handicap golfers hit them from the fairway with a full swing. It’s because they work hard to get themselves into that position.

Golfers with low handicaps all have the same key elements in their wedge shots . Below are descriptions of those key steps.

1. Open Your Stance

Better wedge players keep the lower body quiet . You don’t need a lot of power to hit a wedge and you don’t need a lot of lower body action . But you can’t hit a sound wedge shot without opening your hips. Opening up your stance allows you to use your arms and shoulders to hit the shot without using your lower body.

2. Allow the Wrists to Hinge

Poor players try sweeping, scooping, or lifting the ball in the air with a wedge . Good players hit down and through, creating a nice big divot. One of the secrets to hitting down is wrist hinge. If you don’t hinge your wrists, you’ll sweep the ball of the ground . Hinge early in the backswing. Start your wrist bend in the start of take away. If you wait until the backswing mid-point , you may never hinge.

3. Adjust the Distance of Your Backswing

Good tempo is a must . Backswing length isn’t. Never add speed or stop short to control the distance of a shot. The length of the backswing , not the speed of the swing, dictates shot distances with your wedges–actually with any of your golf clubs. Learn how far you hit each wedge with 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent backswing lengths. Since the full-swing wedge shot we’re talking about could be 36, 42, or 53 yards away, you’ll now have options with which to hit the shot. Remember adjust your backswing, not your tempo.

4. Keep The Front Shoulder Position

Poor wedge players often lift their heads when approaching the ball. While that in itself isn’t a major crime, it forces you to bring your front shoulder up and out. That is. It’s a fault I emphasize in my golf lessons and golf tips. Work on allowing your head to rotate along with your back shoulder as it swings underneath your chin. Rotating facilitates the shifting of weight to the front side, keeps the spine angle intact, and allows the back shoulder to move toward the target.

5. Finish Low

Keep your hands low after impact on a full-swing wedge shot, almost as if you were about to shake hands with someone to the side of you. Why? One sign of a solid wedge shot is low hands after impact, which indicates hitting down and through. Finishing high tends to negate weight shift and hinders your ability to hit down and through the ball. So keep it low after impact and you’ll approve the result.

6. Strike A Pose For The Cameras

A good swing and a good finish usually go together . Take a few practice swings not with the focus on mechanics but on making a good finish. So take some practice swings and finish by posing for the camera before hitting a wedge shot. Think finish first in this situation. It can help generate a smooth swing and a better result.

Assuming you have the correct golf equipment, adopting these key elements will lower your handicap.

Improve Your Golf Scores with Your Mind

An idea as old as dirt and that certainly applies to golf is “Mind Over Matter”. As in any sporting effort , good mental preparation is important to excel , and it is an easy thing to do. Having good golf clubs is not enough, good mental training is also required.

It is a foregone conclusion that entering any task with lingering doubt is almost guaranteed to produce negative results . So, it is important to establish early that you can play good golf. We are not all equally gifted but that is not the most important factor in our game. You have seen many pros who played well and won tournaments with skills that were far from perfect. They were able to do it because they believed in themselves and whatever talent they had.

Let us assume that you have armed yourself with at least the basics, name brand clubs or discount golf clubs, good grip, decent swing, etc. You start the ball well and have a grasp of how to hit the ball where you want it to go. You do not have to be perfect, only a few will have outstanding golf skills. Now it is a matter of putting what you have into gear and using it consistently.

It is easy to get discouraged because you can not hit the ball long distances with your driver. We all want to be able to do that, but it just may never happen. So, we hit our 175 to 200 yard tee shot in the fairway, play our second shot well and near the green, chip on and putt out. What is wrong with that?  It’s a par!

We do not have to be John Daly   to play the game well and get a lot of enjoyment from it. Just use the skills that you have, take what the course will give you, know you can par any hole, and you will succeed.

Golf – It’s All In The Mind

You may  have top quality golf equipmentand a great coach , but it wont help you a damn if you do not have the right mindset.  There are many famous quotes about golf being a game that is 90% played in the mind  . Your mind is the most powerful tool you pocess , use it properly and you can achieve miracles  .

You need to realise  that if you do not pocess the correct  mental attitude you will not succeed . We all have periods  when our golf game is fantastic  and then the next time we go out our game can go downhill rapidly  .  So why is golf such a mental game?

Our mind is such a sophisticated  piece of apparatus  , we have only two ways of thinking:

  • We get Inspiration and act on it

  • We use the memories that continually replay in our mind of a time when we were in a similar site. This explains why you can frequently  hit the same poor  shot on a certain hole.

Your  subconscious mind is a fantastic piece of technology  , it stores everything we do as memories. The only drawback with this is the subconscious mind cannot make a distinction between good and bad memories. The vast majority of people go through their entire lives just using these memories that are replaying in their mind. This is the reason people develop so many habits and find it so difficult to break them .

So how can we re-program our mind in order to  act more on inspiration and only rely on the good memories we have stored?

There are loads  of techniques you can use to try and reprogram your mind. The biggest problem is that a lot of people are just so dubious  about changing their habits  .  I candidly believe that you must try these things having faith that they will make a difference.

Visualisation is a great tool , anybody can achieve this – we all dream don’t we .  When you are going to take a shot  just picture in your mind you making the perfect golf swing and see  the ball soar into the distance and land precisely where you aimed it. Feels good doesn’t it.  You can use this technique for every shot you make , including putting.

You must always be positive on the golf course.   Whenever you say anything negative  you are putting this idea  into your mind.  You have got to realise how powerful the mind is – if I say to you “don’t think about a big red hairy spider ” I bet you have that image right now in your mind?  You need to  be positive on the golf course, always picture and state that you are going to make a great shot.

Reign in  your emotions on the course. When you see players throwing their clubs you can practically know that their next shot is going to be a bad one .

Another technique that is becoming very popular  for mind training is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). NLP is the modern science of the mind it uses physiology and the unconscious mind to adapt thought processes which allows negative behaviour and habits to be changed to positive  . These are recordings that will put you into a light trance and then make recommendations  to your subconcious mind.  Sounds strange but I have tested them and have never felt so relaxed.  Keep an open mind and give it a go .

So these are a few ideas for you to give some thought to  . To put it plainly – in golf as it is in life – if you can’t imagine it you will never accomplish it!

Learn To Play Golf

Golf Lessons - Newcomers Golf

Whenever your a rookie in golf and you hear golf swing lessons you’re probably thinking what style of golf stance and golf grip do I need to launch they’re first swing. But don’t worry it is not complicated to learn. I’ve noted below a couple of lessons that you simply must know.

Golf  Grip - it is a factor that affects your swing. Before you decide to swing be sure that you get a good grip. It’s not slippery, slick or hard. If your grip isn’t then you’re good to swing.

Golf Stance - having good balance along with a relaxed stance is good for swinging. It’s probably not going to be as good as you want but it helps if you are throwing the facets of the game.

In order to get a good stance then you need to place the inside of your foot forward of the ball. Your feet should be shoulder width apart. Then you should bend at the top of the knees, continue to keep ones back straight, after which you can bend at the knees slightly.

Tip: the knee cap is directly above the balls of the feet. Your back should be at a 45 degree angle and your arms hang straight down from the shoulder. Keep the feet align every time that you’re going to swing.

Back Swing - you coil your body after which you can you create the muscle torque needed to release a powerful downswing. This resistance is created between the turning of the upper body and shoulder.

Tip: don’t go in a hurry simply because it won’t cause it to go any faster. Just keep tempo and take some time. Make a couple trial swings before hitting the ball.

Release – This is the term utilized in golf when you are going to hit the ball. You are unable to make the impact by yourself. Your swing should reach it’s momentum to execute it effortlessly and release, then it’s going to surely result into a good shoot.

Really you want to square the clubface through the impact of rotating the right forearm or left if your left handed. Following the impact, your arms should be extended fully as the lower part of the body rotates to the left while the club remains on the target line. The arm passes your body through the impact zone and your head should remain behind the ball.

You can’t just know how to do this position without learning. When you learn you can make it happen automatically.
